Tandem-Program at the Faculty of Law

Brief description

The Jura-Tandem Heidelberg serves the linguistic and cultural exchange between German and international law students. In joint meetings with several tandems or through independent meetings, the program offers a platform to meet fellow students from Germany and abroad, to get to know other cultures and to network with each other. In addition to getting to know each other, it also serves to promote the professional development of first-year students, e.g. by solving legal cases together.

Added value of the program

The Tandem-Program provides a framework for the various encounters for the duration of a semester and combines the different aspects with each other. This is made possible by the voluntary work of various students from the faculty, who are responsible for organizing the program during the semester. They are also responsible for putting together the tandems. For German students, this provides an initial contact for a possible stay abroad. For foreign students, on the other hand, contact with the university and the German students is facilitated. The framework program set by the Tandem-Program offers the first possibilities, which can also be completed independently. Participants can also earn a certificate for regular participation. Former participants summarize the Tandem-Program as follows:

Voices of participants

  • During the introductory week for first-year students, we were presented with numerous incredibly exciting projects and student groups that we could get involved in - so many that I personally found it very difficult to narrow down my choices. However, the Tandem-Program made a very good impression on me right from the start, which is why I immediately applied for it after a brief conversation with the organizers following a first-year event. I was particularly looking forward to the contact with international students, because I also have an intercultural background myself and therefore always enjoy exchanging ideas with people who have also had international experience.

  • The fact that we spoke a lot in German was an advantage for me. Especially as an Erasmus student, the Tandem-Program is a perfect way to improve your German while having fun. Thanks to the great activities, you get to know other great cities in the Heidelberg area and you can relax after university with great evenings.

  • A central component of the Tandem-Program was, of course, the range of events organized by the Tandem team. I also found the content of the events enriching: I took a lot away from the visit to the district court in Heidelberg and the film evening about Ruth Bader-Ginsburg in particular, but also from the lecture by the state data protection officer Dr. Stefan Brink.

  • We always had fun at the events organized by the Tandem team. We also often came into contact with other students there. Our program included a bowling evening, a visit to the Christmas market in Speyer, a film evening, a lecture on Europe and data protection, as well as the final event - a potluck. The team had organized all the events well. I found the program to be a very pleasant way to spend my free time, and the references to the subject were also very interesting and definitely manageable in terms of quantity.
