LL.M. Program - Master of Laws in German and European Law
Post Graduate Program Master of Laws in German and European Law (LL.M.)
The Faculty of Law at Heidelberg University offers students having graduated in law at a university beyond Germany the opportunity to complete a two-semester advancement course in German and European law. Students graduate with the degree of Master of Laws (LLM). The Master’s degree program is intended to be studied full-time in Heidelberg. Students become familiar with key concepts and principles of the German legal system, including international and European law. The course programme also enables students to acquire specialist knowledge in self-selected fields of law, foundational subjects, or criminology.
Structure of the LL.M. Program
The degree program consists of six modules:
Module I Compulsory Module I: Civil Law
Module II Compulsory Module II: Public Law
Module III Compulsory Module III: Seminar
Module IV Elective modules: lectures, seminars, colloquia
Module V Master's thesis
Module VI Oral Magister examination
The foundations of German civil and public law are studied intensively in modules I and II. Module III combines research and teaching. The thematic focus of the content remains open. Module IV offers a wide range of elective courses relating to fields of current law, as well as foundational subjects and criminology. Students may also choose among courses on the basis of course format, as well as different forms of examination and methods of assessment offered. Module V consists in the master's thesis, which gives students the opportunity to undertake in-depth research. It is supplemented by module VI, the oral Magister examination, which focuses on the field of law considered in the Magister thesis as well as any neighbouring fields of law. Students are permitted to commence work on the Magister thesis only after they have successfully completed modules I and II.
Admission to the LL.M. Program
Admission is granted on the basis of a formal application which must be submitted by the stated application deadline (15 July). Please note that admission is possible for the winter semester only. Candidates must meet the following criteria:
– successful completion of a degree in law at an institution beyond Germany, which can be considered equivalent to the first legal examination.
– very good German language skills. Students must successfully complete the level 3 German language test for the admission to universities (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang – DSH), or one of the equivalents stated in the admission regulations.

Ms. Schröder takes care of such things as registration of courses, thesis and oral part of final examination, showing evidence of passed examinations, applications for transcripts of records, preparing an apostille etc.
